KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Society for Biomedical Science (MyBiomed) successfully hosted a high-impact webinar titled “From Classroom to National Recognition: A Journey of Purpose, Pedagogy, and Impact in Health Sciences Education” earlier today.

Organized by the Exco Scientific committee, the session attracted 88 participants, comprising both MyBiomed members and the general public, for an insightful 90-minute session dedicated to the art and science of teaching.

The webinar featured Dr. Manraj Singh Cheema from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), a distinguished figure in the field and recipient of the National Academic Award (Anugerah Akademik Negara) in the Teaching Award category (Health Sciences Group).

Reframing the Role of the Educator

Dr. Manraj delivered a compelling presentation that challenged educators to look beyond traditional lectures. The core of the session focused on prompting critical reflection on current teaching practices.

Dr. Manraj emphasized that student disengagement should not be viewed merely as a lack of motivation, but rather as a "design challenge." He urged participants to understand why traditional methods often fail to meet modern learning needs and how intentional design can bridge that gap.

Teaching as an Ethical Act

A significant portion of the webinar was dedicated to the philosophy of education. Dr. Manraj repositioned teaching as a fundamentally ethical and moral act.

"Teaching decisions are never neutral," the speaker noted. "They significantly influence the development of students' thinking, values, and professional identity in the health sciences."

Practical Pedagogies for Meaningful Learning

Moving from theory to practice, the session introduced outcome-driven, design-focused pedagogical approaches. Rather than focusing solely on delivering content, the webinar highlighted practical principles, including:

  • Active Learning: Engaging students directly in the learning process.

  • Psychological Safety: Creating environments where students feel safe to take intellectual risks.

  • Assessment Alignment: Ensuring that testing methods actually measure what students need to accomplish.

Small Changes, Sustainable Impact

The session concluded with a powerful call to action. Dr. Manraj empowered educators to implement small, actionable changes for sustainable impact. Participants were motivated to "take charge of change" by redesigning a single learning session, refining assessment signals, or crafting more insightful questions to enhance the student experience.

MyBiomed extends its gratitude to Dr. Manraj Singh Cheema for sharing his expertise and to all 88 participants for making this event a success.
